How does this work?

When a file is deleted it is actually still on the hard drive, but it is marked as 'deleted'. In the future the system can overwrite it as it thinks of deleted files as free space. Because of this, deleted files can be recovered, providing they haven't already been overwritten by other files copied or written to the hard drive after the original file was deleted.

So if you reaslise you have deleted something and need it recovered, STOP! DO NOT copy any files to the hard drive or install any programs on the same hard drive that the deleted data is on! The less activity that happens on the drive, the higher the chance that the file can be recovered!

DO NOT use the same machine to browse the Internet as when you view web pages the system writes temporary files to the hard drive - potentially overwriting your deleted files!
